Localization and Globalization

Nowadays the word “globalization” is used in an ambiguous way. For example, in the news it refers to an economic globalization, furiously criticized by some antiglobalist groups, and needs to be preceeded by the globalization of social programs and human rights. Even though this meaning of the word “globalization” has no direct connection with linguistics or translations, it still bears the meaning “making something global, universal”.

Globalization of anything, whether it is a social program, marketing strategy, web-site or software, means the distribution of a product in several countries by the most acceptable and convenient way. The distinctive feature of globalization is that it can never be universal; it can never target all the countries and languages of the world. Today the number of languages on the planet adds up to 6000, but with globalization not more than six languages are ever used simultaneously.

Localization of software, games and web-sites makes them accessible and understandable for the targeted audience in certain countries. It is a delicate and sophisticated process of cutting the diamond you have created. Inadequate translation of software will not only annoy the users, it will negatively affect the productivity of work and company profits. Poor translation of a video game will lead to the misunderstanding of a plot and an overall disappointment in the product. The desire to save money or perform the work within an unreasonably limited period of time can negatively affect the quality of the work. In order to avoid it, it is necessary to choose the executor of the service for localization of your product carefully.

When ordering localization of software, video games or web-sites, pay attention to the following stages of the work:

- Making up the glossary (minimum set of frequent words often seen in the whole text) which is usually provided by the Customer, due to the Customer being more familiar with the content at the initial stage;

- Translation and approval of the glossary (after translation is completed it can be evaluated by an independent expert or a native speaker);

- Gathering a work group of translators (if required), assigning an editor translator and a native speaker editor;

- Sending the approved glossary to all the translators of the group;

- Editing of the translation by the editor translator;

- Proofreading of the edited translation by the native speaker;

- Testing the product on the targeted audience, correcting the flaws if any;

- Further linguistic support of the translated product (information update on the website, support for the software users and games).

In each separate case the system and the stages of the work are individually discussed with the Customers, in order not to pay for unnecessary types of works, save time and at the completion of the localization, get the product that fully satisfies them.
